2013 will see the creation of Durham's newest mural and you have a chance to get involved! Funded through a generous grant from the City of Durham, The Durham Civil Rights History Mural Project will begin in February with a series of educational workshops conducted by a teaching team under the leadership of Dr. Benjamin Speller. Dr. Speller served as the Dean of the School of Library and Information Sciences at North Carolina Central University from 1983-2004, is a scholar of Durham Civil Rights History and served as the president of Preservation Durham from 2000-2004. These workshops will be free and open to the public. Together we will learn about Durham's profound history, and 30 community participants will collaborate, under the direction of muralist Brenda Miller Holmes, to transform this knowledge into a cohesive mural design.  We will then work together to paint an 800 square foot mural in downtown Durham. Would you like to join us?
We are seeking 30 Durham residents, 15 youth (ages 15-20) and 15 adults (age 21-seniors) to participate. Please click on one of the links below to obtain, and fill out, an application if you are interested. The information on the form is being gathered in an effort to select interested participants, but there are no "right" answers to these questions. We are most interested in gathering a diverse, multi-generational group of enthusiastic Durhamites that can fully commit to the duration of the project and participants will be selected based on creating group balance and compatible schedules. We want to stress that we will be learning together as a community and encourage all interested to apply. In addition to the 30 core participants, there will be multiple opportunities to be involved, so if you would like to participate but are unable to commit to the full schedule, submit a form and let us know. Completed forms can be submitted electronically (at the email below) or via mail to 1006 Lansing Avenue, Durham NC 27713. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].
Deadline for submissions is 1/30/2013.

Thanks and hope to collaborate with you!
